4th August: Owl Day
A day after our own hearts! A day for us to focus on and celebrate the nocturnal hunter, the owl. The Scottish Owl Centre is home to 150 owls, the largest collection of owls in the world. On this Owl Day, we heartedly encourage you to visit – they have regular ‘flying days’ or ‘meet the owl’ sessions.
And, while it’s not strictly about the animal, the owl, we would love to highlight the work of OWL Scotland who passionately support woodland and outdoor learning.
12th – 18th August: National Allotment Week
It was during Victorian times when allotments (small plots of land ‘field gardens’ available to rent where people grow plants, fruits and vegetables) became a thing. They’re still going strong with approximately 330,000 plots in the UK. The National Allotment Society has chosen ‘Celebrating Biodiversity on UK Allotments’ as this year’s theme and we’ve got some brilliant lessons to support that. Edible Flowers, Weeds: Flowers in the Wrong Places, Setting Up a School Garden, and Starting a School Garden.
19th August: World Photography Day
This wonderful description of World Photography Day is from the aptly named website worldphotographyday.com: “World Photography Day is an annual, worldwide celebration of the art, craft, science and history of photography.” We’ve got some really lovely outdoor lessons for you: Photography Habitats, Lego Movie, and Split Frame.
30th August: Toasted Marshmallow Day
A day that’s a firm favourite with children when celebrated outdoors. Who doesn’t relish the chance to toast a marshmallow on an open fire!? If you’re planning on doing so, do check out our Fire Risk Assessment before diving into the Pancakes and Small Fires Outdoors lesson.
