1st March: St David’s Day
St David’s Day is a day dedicated to the patron saint of Wales: St Davids, or Dewi Sant in Welsh. Twinkl has some lovely Welsh-themed activities and here’s a recipe for campfire Welsh Cakes.
2nd March: National Old Stuff Day
A day that’s open to interpretation. After all, ‘old stuff’ can mean anything from our history to our old toys, to our old habits and old ways of doing things. It could be a chance for children to upcycle, a way to introduce old-fashioned games, dig into history, or go on a local walk and explore the local history.
3rd March: World Wildlife Day
Every year on the 3rd of March, we celebrate wild animals and plants as part of the United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD). This year’s theme is Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation and we have two lessons which tie in nicely: a lesson on photographing habitats and another on sea measures.
3rd March: World Hearing Day
The Office of Prevention of Blindness and Deafness of the World Health Organization host World Hearing Day each year on the 3rd of March. We’ve written a blog for you and have got some lovely lessons to tie-in with World Hearing Day – What The LadyBird Heard, Sound Poem, Senses Poem and Mindful Listening.
4th March: Shrove Tuesday
Take Shrove Tuesday outdoors and you’ll have an unforgettable day. You can make pancakes over a small fire. There’s something so special about outdoor cooking (for kids and adults, alike!).
6th March: World Book Day
Stories are powerful; they connect, convey, captivate and give us a chance to escape into mysterious and mystical worlds. World Book Day encourages us to celebrate our favourite authors and illustrators. We’ve got a lesson for you which includes book activities and two fantastic blog posts Top Books for Outdoor Learning and 5 Free Outdoor Activities for World Book Day.
7th – 16th March: British Science Week
A 10-day celebration of STEM with this year’s theme being ‘time’. The 2025 theme is ‘Change and Adapt’. We’ve got a plethora of science-based lessons for you and this blog might come in handy, too Outdoor Sciences.
12th March: Plant a Flower Day
Flowers are crucial for our biodiversity and ecosystems. There’s something magical about planting seeds or seedlings and watching them thrive. We’ve got plenty of lessons to support you during this day: Edible Flowers, Weeds: Flowers in the Wrong Place, Flower Feeding Experiment, and (our favourite) Setting Up a School Garden. Do also have a read of Starting a School Garden.
17th March: St Patrick’s Day
St Patrick’s Day, or feast day, is dedicated to the patron Saint of Ireland. Consider going on a shamrock hunt or doing some limerick-writing outside.
20th March: World Frog Day
A much-needed awareness day for, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 41% of amphibian species are at risk of extinction. The Scottish Wildlife Trust has this lovely fact file on the Common Frog. Whilst Froglife Scotland has some amazing education resources. For those of you who’d like to create a habitat to support frogs and their friends, here’s a piece about school pond installation and considerations.
20th March: Spring Equinox
The first astronomically official day of Spring is the vernal equinox. It’s on this precise date that the days and nights are technically the same lengths. We’ve got a lesson dedicated to the Spring Equinox. You may also be interested in A Spring Surprise: A Peter Rabbit Story and Blossom in Spring.
20th March: International Day of Happiness
The General Assembly of the United Nations created this awareness day. A day which focuses on the role happiness plays in our health and wellbeing. When it comes to happiness, outdoor learning is a great source of joy for us here at Love Outdoor Learning.
21st – 6th April: Great British Spring Clean
According to Keep Britain Tidy, over 400,000 bags of litter were pledged to be collected during the campaign! Litter causes so much damage to our environment and habitats. Most local councils are keen to support any activities you plan with your school. Be a #LitterHero
21st March: World Poetry Day
Limericks, ballads, haikus… Life would certainly be less rhythmic and lyrical without poetry. This year’s theme for National Poetry Day (do read our blog) is “How do I love thee?” which is an iconic line written by dedicated to her husband Robert Browning. We’ve got a lovely lesson for taking poetry outdoors.
21st March: International Day of Forests
A healthy planet is intrinsically linked to the health of our forests which is why The United Nations General Assembly created the International Day of Forests to raise awareness and understanding of how vitally important it is to protect them. There’s a lesson about Rainforest and Woodland Layers which is fascinating, as well as one about Forest Bathing, that we think you’ll like.
22nd March: World Water Day
This annual United Nations observance aims to increase our awareness surrounding the importance of protecting our freshwater and the equity in having accessibility to it. The focus this year is on “water for peace”. If you’re after some teaching resources, The National Inventors Hall of Fame has this STEM activity.
23rd March: World Meteorological Day
A day that commemorates the date the World Meteorological Organization was established in 1950. Our blog Windy Day STEM, and our lessons Windy Anemometer, Wind Chime and Sundial are a perfect fit.
24th – 30th March: Shakespeare Week
Organised by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Shakespeare week is dedicated to the life and work of William Shakespeare. Our blog Sunshine at Midsummer will be useful, as will the vast array of teaching resources created by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.
24th March – 4th April: The Big Walk and Wheel Week
At the time of writing this, there are 703 schools registered for this inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling to school competition – don’t forget to register if your school is taking part too. As for lessons we’ve got your back, as always! There’s the Easter Egg Experiment in Road Safety and Probability: A Walk in the Park. 28th March: National Skipping Day
Organised by Skipping Workshops, this annual day aims to raise awareness of physical health in our children, through a day of skipping. We’ve got a list of skipping games for you so you’re all set.
30th March or 31st March: Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr, often simply referred to as Eid, is a significant religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid al-Fitr translates to “Festival of Breaking the Fast.”
