December 2026: Awareness Dates, Resources and Lesson Plans

Resources, Tips + Lesson Ideas
  • September 27, 2024

🦉Please note: the lesson plans we’ve linked to below are only available to members. If you’d like to be supported in curriculum-based outdoor learning, please take a look at the membership options available.

5th December: Tree Dressing Day

A wonderful day to celebrate, honour and appreciate the importance of trees by decorating them with handmade, eco-friendly ornaments. Create festive decorations using natural materials with our Christmas Wall Hangings lesson.

5th December: World Soil Day

World Soil Day is all about recognising the crucial role that soil plays in our environment, from growing food to sustaining ecosystems. It’s a great opportunity to dig deep—literally—and explore the importance of healthy soil. Here’s a tactile lesson on soil types with Soil Text Lessons.

7th December: Civil World Aviation Day

Civil Aviation Day celebrates how air travel connects us globally, but it also provides a chance to discuss the environmental impacts of flying. This day could be a launchpad for lessons about sustainable travel, how aviation is evolving to be greener, and how we can reduce our carbon footprint. It’s a good time to introduce outdoor STEM activities that explore the science behind flight and its environmental consequences.

14th – 22nd December: Hanukkah

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is a time for celebrating perseverance and cultural heritage. During this eight-day celebration, why not explore the holiday by creating a Hanukkah Star of David? It’s a great way to combine cultural studies with hands-on creativity, helping students learn about different traditions.

21st December: Robin Day

Robin Day is the perfect time to get outdoors and spot one of the UK’s most beloved winter birds. With their bright red breasts, robins are a cheerful sight in winter. Use our Fat Balls lesson to help students create bird feeders, providing much-needed food for robins and other birds during the colder months.

21st December: Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, is a celebration of light returning and marks the changing seasons. Use this day to teach lessons such as the Winter Solstice Story and Activities, or engage in nature with a Winter Scavenger Hunt. Also, don’t forget to check out our blog on The Magic of Snowdrops for inspiration.

24th – 26th December: Christmas

Christmas is not just about festive celebrations but also a wonderful time to focus on creativity and giving. Our Christmas Cards lesson can help us connect with the season and enjoy outdoor activities even during the festive period.

Starts 26th December: The Festival of Winter Walks

The Festival of Winter Walks encourages everyone to enjoy the outdoors during the winter holidays. It’s a fantastic chance to promote physical activity and mental well-being through nature walks.

31st December: Hogmanay

Hogmanay, Scotland’s celebration of the New Year, is steeped in tradition. As the year draws to a close, we can reflect on the past year and set intentions for the year ahead. Get creative with nature-inspired activities like making Memory Sticks, a beautiful way for students to capture their memories and a thoughtful and creative way to say farewell to the old year and welcome in the new one.
