January 2026 Awareness Dates

🦉Please note: the lesson plans we’ve linked to below are only available to members. If you’d like to be supported in curriculum-based outdoor learning, please take a look at the membership options available.

7th January – 14th February: Big School Birdwatch

Big School Birdwatch is a hands-on way to explore local wildlife. With resources from the RSPB and lessons on Fat Balls and Bird Watching, students can discover the importance of birds and their habitats. Check out our blog on Nature Identification Skills.

13th – 19th January: House Plant Week

House Plant Week is the perfect opportunity to bring a bit of green into the classroom and explore plant life. Our lessons on Categories of Plants, Exploring Plant Differences, and Researching Plants are ideal for teaching plant care and the science behind greenery. Take a look at our blog on 5 Plants for Your Classroom, too.

17th – 23rd January: Big Energy Saving Week

Big Energy Saving Week encourages us to think critically about energy use and conservation. Use our lesson on Exploring Sustainable Energy Sources to spark discussion on renewable energy and its importance in daily life.

18th January: Winnie the Pooh Day

Celebrate the wonderful world of Winnie the Pooh by taking learning outdoors with themed activities like Thinking Spots and creating Eeyore’s Stick House to chat about glum emotions. You could try making a Clay Pinch Honey Pot or Play Pooh Sticks, which introduces tricky math for older kids. Our Winnie the Pooh Day Ideas blog offers even more outdoor inspiration.

18th January: World Religion Day

World Religion Day promotes understanding across cultures and religions. Discover our Religious and Moral Education Lessons for thoughtful ways to explore different beliefs.

19th January: Popcorn Day

A day for popcorn fun! Use this tasty treat to inspire math activities, like counting kernels, and creative projects with outdoor activities.

20th January: Penguin Day

Celebrate Penguin Day by discussing the challenges faced by these incredible creatures. Our blog on Managing Lessons Outdoors offers practical tips for planning outdoor learning.

21st January: Squirrel Appreciation Day

Teach children about squirrels’ role in the ecosystem, with outdoor activities to observe and appreciate their habits. Use resources from Scottish Squirrels and The Woodland Trust.

23th January: Handwriting Day

Taking handwriting practice outside can make this traditional skill engaging and fun for students. Get creative with Handwriting Outdoors or make Natural Letters.

24th January: International Day of Education

This day is a reminder of the importance of education for all. Discover more from UNESCO on the impact of education worldwide and explore ways to make learning accessible for everyone.

25th January: Burns Night

A day dedicated to celebrating the life and work of Scottish poet Robert Burns with outdoor lessons on Wee Sleekit Cowrin Timrous Beastie. Dive into our blog on Writing for Burns Night for ideas about teaching poetry and storytelling.
