Staff Training

Home » For Educators » Staff Training

Learning outdoors is an expectation both within the Curriculum for Excellence and the GTCS standards. However, many teachers can feel deskilled in this different environment, unsure how to approach the learning.

Love Outdoor Learning provide training for your staff, either on site or at a nearby wood through a bespoke package created for your school. This takes account your individual journey into outdoor learning.  Our training develops staff confidence when teaching outdoors. We provide your staff with a range of strategies and give practical lesson ideas to facilitate and manage learning, across all areas of the curriculum.

Our aim is to turn outdoor learning into just another tool for a teacher to use, suitable for any stage and curricular area.

During these unprecedented times teachers are being asked to completely change how they teach. There is minimal time for training, however, all our training can be taken online to support your staff.

We are pleased to offer free support with our audio PowerPoint, Outdoor Learning – Hints and Tips.  This is designed to support teachers with outdoor learning now and in the future.

Training Session

Literacy Days AND Literacy

Literacy

Think of the books that children enjoy, from Oxford Reading Tree to the novels further up the school.  Often, they are largely set in the outdoors.  This course explores how we can use the outdoors to teach reading, writing, talking and listening.  It doesn’t matter if your playground is a small tarmac area within the inner city or a huge green space in the countryside, there will always be ways it can be used to aid literacy.

Mathematics and Numeracy

For me, as a teacher, I always found that making learning real and using it in a real life context helped children solidify their understanding of mathematical concepts.  This training covers the maths curriculum, from place value to algebra, information handling to measurement, all areas of the maths and numeracy curriculum can be explored.  It doesn’t matter if your playground is a small tarmac area within the inner city or a huge green space in the countryside, there will always be ways it can be used to aid mathematics and numeracy.

Expressive Arts

Many artists use the outdoors as a stimulus for their work, there is no reason why the children cannot do so too.  It doesn’t matter if your playground is a small tarmac area within the inner city or a huge green space in the countryside, there will always be ways it can be used to aid learning.

Get Out The Playground

Leaving the familiarity and comfort of the school grounds can be a daunting prospect for even the most experienced of teachers.  This course will explore some of the learning which can take place in the local community or woodlands.  From local history to building links with the community, there are many reasons to get outwith the school grounds.   It doesn’t matter if you are based within the inner city or in the countryside, there will always be ways it can be used to aid learning.

STEM

STEM in the outdoors can be very motivational for children, just being outdoors presents a host of additional challenges to compliment the STEM activities.  It doesn’t matter if your playground is a small tarmac area within the inner city or a huge green space in the countryside, there will always be ways it can be used to aid learning.
