Outdoor Classroom Day – Thursday Thoughts

One activity we love which is creating mandalas from natural materials. This is a wonderful way to encourage children to work together, talk and think.

A Mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in the Indian religions of Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe.  This lesson can link to RME, maths, art and more.  But it also encompasses a number of skills including problem solving, exploration, decision making, team work and more.  It can be completed with any age group and a range of abilities.

Simply use materials found outside and create your art work.  Yes, this can be particularly pretty with a rich natural landscape, but equally, we have enjoyed this activity on concrete.  You would be amazed at the rich abundance of resources children can discover that even we don’t see.
